Burden

Lay down your baggage,
your burden,
your song in time,
repeated
as if all of it was true.

More than the words alone,
its chorus
sends you back in time
remembering
what it was you lost.

Lay your burden down,
your baggage
gathered over time;
who would believe that
emptiness could weigh so much?

All the weary loss you felt
you had to carry
all this time,
do not mourn it
instead of those it hides you from;

Lay aside the refrains
of parting,
remember, this time,
the missing and the dead,
are only silences in your song.

A consideration of loss and the lifetime it consumes. A long way now from an original idea shared with my writing group.
