Jacob’s ladder

we who climbed it
were not angels

heaven was always
the wherever-after

in our eternal rising
we forgot the world below

we forgot the lives
that made our lives whole

little wonder heaven
was an airless void

Another short piece. This time, about expectations of eternity. I’m reminded of one answer to the question ‘What about life after death?”

“That depends on whether there’s life before death…”

The illustration is based on Creeping Jacob's Ladder - Polemonium reptans 'Stairway to Heaven'. The ladder is ancient and the void entirely my own.
