every word a meaning

every word a meaning
a shade a shadow a scrawl on a wall
unpunctuated graffiti overstretched tense
slogans on billboards jumped-up letters tortured sense

every word a meaning
impregnated messages artless invective
unutterable the mouth that instructs the tongue
that twists and turns the voice to ashes in the throat

every word a meaning
persuasion’s name for tomorrow
shunts syllables down the track like boxcar freight
made-to-measure nuance dictionary-definition sleight

every word a meaning
my whisper your hard-of-hearing hope
that I might tell the truth about the world’s face peering
in the window of this soulless place our home sweet home

every word a meaning
to pin a tag a label scratch a footnote on every blade
of grass the natural order of things insufficient to the evil
of the talked-up day the pigeon-holed the dove-tailed day

every word a meaning
of a kind a facet a plea to let things be in silence
not drowned in wordiness and tied-to-the-apron-strings fact
frictionless fiction truth left untold in this misery of naming

every word a meaning
in someone else’s words a contradiction in terms
a truce between this and that time and tide stone and air
thrown objects ripples on the surface waves of interference

every word a meaning
to make us buy more cheapskate wares
to grace our mantels dissonance and assonance
echoing and alone in the human-handed spin of uncertainty

every word a meaning
double entendre could-have-been-a-contender
no more prizes more words than answers too many questions
about how we are arriving always on the point of leaving

every word a meaning
words and letters from our elders not our betters go-getters
who tell it all for gain tell it for a reason never make it plain
we’re the ears we’re the fools they shape us like tools

with words and words and more and more words
every single word skewed and leaning
every word a meaning every word
a bloody meaning

Well, more of epistemology or of semantics. What do we mean; what do we know? Well, bugger me, I’m at a loss. we think we know what we mean or for that matter what we know. But then, isn’t it all nuance. The subtleties of thought. As we slide through our days, with the mistaken certainty that everything we think is identically replicated in the thoughts of others.

Well, it’s now. Sorry to disappoint.
