Sun

The day’s one good eye,
looked down on
the wicked and the holy;
cast its light
on neutral ground,
illuminated a world.

We who worshipped bright earth
turned away from the glare,
let invented gods reflect it,
raised our monuments,
bowed our heads in shadow.

By that token,
we sacrificed our hearts
to bring the sun home
from the dead places of the night
out of cold soil or sorrowful sea
to give us one day more.

Something from the planetarium days. Just a fragment, originally written in 1999 as ‘Sun and Moon’, and never quite completed. I opened it up and created a series of three - Sun, Moon, and Stars. Tried to put more of an edge on them. Fit for today’s even more fractured world.
