Painted in the arms

A face in the hereafter
stared and smirked against clouds
in a blue heaven whose wisps
framed the pair of them…

…the deceased and his saviour,
Jesus, arms outstretched to welcome
one of the faithful as he rose up,
rose up in commissioned oils,
painted in the arms of Jesus…

…so the living may be reminded
of a hereafter, of a God and His Son,
and ourselves, an image we created,
the picture of our conceit.

A friend on Facebook posted an image advertising paintings of a departed loved one being welcomed by Jesus.

Apart from it being hugely cheesy and dreadfully North-American and WASP-oriented, the queasy feeling in my gut was a reaction to the colossal hubris implied by such a scheme.

Hence this.
