saturday music

the rev of engines
the massed masses’
pipes and drums
was music to my ears

and rock & roll marching
with pibroch and puirt à beul
was freedom’s call and answer
a boom-box jive on the streets

the wind made its own beat
whipped five thousand flags
into a single crack of thunder
ten thousand voices raised

there was a steady rhythm
as tarmac echoed the journey
a different future approaching
footstep by footstep

this is the song of tomorrow
of dawn and twilight circling
where no-one owns the light
nor the darkness nor that music

just people walking
determined in their hearts
walking and singing out loud
on the hard stone road

I went on the Inverness freedom March - 25th January 2020. Estimated 8,000 - 12,000 marchers. It was a good way to spend the day. Lots of flags and positive people. I responded to the Poetry24 challenge ‘MUSIC’ with my first draft. After a little more work, I posted it to the IFM page - that, after all, was where it belonged.
