the truth
has finally dawned
no-one calculated
the cost of the wind
as we should have
building for
tomorrow

there is
no season
for rain like this
nor for storm or snow
nor the dry desert
once in a lifetime
everything arrives
too soon

we made
our own weather
out of hollow words
promises we could
not keep

cycles of change
we understood
and prepared for
in the balance sheets
of the world

we did not
and still do not
see the spiral where
our tinkering leads
unfathomable
downward
deep

for all
our money
in the bank
assets as yet
unstripped
profit or loss
unaccounted
none of us
reckoned the price
of dying out
